Achieving health and educational goals through schools—a study of the importance of the school climate and the students' satisfaction with school

1998

Over the past two decades many studies have examined the effectiveness of classroom teaching in influencing present and future health and health behaviours. Few of these studies have examined the importance of the students' satisfaction with school as a variable which explains effect, and in particular what determines their satisfaction with school. Based on data from the 'Health Behaviour in School-aged Children Survey', this paper presents a review of relevant literature and examines how the students' perception of school climate relates to their satisfaction with school. Data from 11-, 13- and 15year-old students in Finland, Latvia, Norway and Slovakia are used. In all countries, the old…

Thus, Mens sana in corpore exhausto proposes to demonstrate the tension that is expressed between the growing series of discourses on emotional education and the school climate and the exhaustive bodies of teachers and directors of public secondary schools in the Metropolitan Region of Buenos Aires (RMBA). By way of hypothesis, these policies are considered to work on the bodies of teachers and directors, encouraging them to continue and not stop under the logic of management and self-management that throw …

Effects of school climate and teacher self-efficacy on job satisfaction of mostly STEM teachers: a structural multigroup invariance approach

2020

Abstract Background Identification and retention of effective teachers in STEM education play cardinal roles in teacher recruitment exercises worldwide. Studies on factors that characterize effective teachers have therefore gained popularity in recent times. Teacher self-efficacy, job satisfaction and school climate are among other factors that have attracted global attention. Thus, proper understanding of the relations between these factors is equally important. The purpose of this study is to validate and cross-validate a model of direct/indirect effects of school climate and teacher self-efficacy on job satisfaction. Results The data used for the current study are extracted from a public…

Principal self-efficacy and school climate as antecedents of collective teacher efficacy

2023

The importance of collective teacher efficacy (CTE) has been increasingly emphasised, but few studies have focused on how it can be enhanced. Since CTE is assumed to be related to factors that differ between schools, the belief-shaping sources of CTE could be related to principals’ beliefs of their efficacy. Moreover, a school climate that centralises teachers’ attempts to improve student learning could enhance CTE. This paper examines a proposed analytical model that links principal self-efficacy (PSE) to CTE, as mediated by the school climate. The model is tested via a multilevel analysis with data from 70 Finnish schools and 767 educators. The analysis revealed that PSE is partially and …

Conceptions associated with sense of belonging in different school placements for Finnish pupils with special education needs

2015

AbstractThe aim of this study was to examine conceptions associated with sense of belonging (SEBE) in Finnish general and special school placements for pupils with special education needs. Five pupils were selected for this study by means of purposive sampling. They had a history of several school placements prior to arriving at their current special school. Qualitative phenomenographic analyses of interview transcripts revealed numerous conceptions regarding the pupils’ SEBE in the different educational placements. The pupils had undergone numerous placements in which their SEBE had been jeopardised, as disturbing relationships with teachers and peers seemed to have affected the pupils’ me…

Reciprocal Relationships Between Perceived Supportive School Climate and Self-reported Truancy : A Longitudinal Study from Grade 6 to Grade 9

2022

This longitudinal study of 1,066 Finnish students examined bidirectional reciprocal relationships between changes in perceived supportive school climate and changes in self-reported truancy from the last year of primary school (Grade 6) to the last year of lower secondary school (Grade 9). The results of the random intercept cross-lagged panel model showed, first, that a decrease in positive perceptions of school climate at the previous time point predicted more self-reported truancy at the following time point. Second, an increase in self-reported truancy predicted less positive perceptions of supportive school climate. The study indicates that students’ perceptions of supportive school cl…

Vidusskolēnu uztvertā skolas klimata un depresijas simptomu sakarība

2020
